An ingrown toenail occurs when one of your toenails starts growing into your skin, cutting into it and creating an open wound. Ingrown toenails are a common problem, but they can be dangerous for people with diabetes. Diabetes typically causes poor circulation in your hands and feet, which makes it harder for your body to fight off an infection, and the open wound caused by an ingrown toenail can easily become infected by bacteria on the ground.
